Steve Thompson

I have lived and worked in West Wales since the early 1980's (although I come from Leeds).  I have worked with wood for all of this time, beginning with furniture, moving away from it for too long, then returning to it in the late 1990s.

Despite a few recent forays into working with local hardwoods I seem to be repeatedly drawn back to the almost industrial properties of birch plywood.  I like the subtle grain and have been known to obsess about the delicacy of its pattern and colour the more finely you sand it. I like its raw functionality and the fact that you can push it to its limits and it doesn't mind.

I have been a member of Makers Guild in Wales for 10 years, becoming increasingly interested in design, and simplicity in design, the longer I remain a member.  This has not stopped me becoming less sensible and more whimsical in my designs in the last few years.

Gary Moore
Furniture Designer/Maker

After working for twenty years as a printer, I decided on a complete career change - I wanted to design and make furniture. I began apprenticing with established designer/makers in England and Wales to learn the craft, whilst taking joinery and design classes.

When my employer’s workshop closed in 2008, I decided to strike out on my own. I've spent the past two years learning to design in CAD, building my designs and making furniture mostly for family and friends, although I have sold a few pieces though the www.notonthehighstreet.com website under the name "The Life Aesthetic".

My friends always ask how I get inspirations for my designs. Honestly, I get inspiration from everywhere.  Almost everything you look at has something interesting or beautiful about it. I like to experiment with form, function and humour and find my own way of translating the vision in my head to the final product, rather than relying on traditional design styles and methods. All my furniture is handcrafted from sustainably-sourced, eco-friendly materials. I make all of the furniture myself in my workshop in Wales and I am a member of the British European Design Group.

I’ve recently launched my own website, www.garymoorefurniture.com, where people can see the pieces I’ve made so far, and they can request a bespoke piece of furniture, or I can make them any of the designs they see in the gallery.

Sophie Rodgers

I’m Sophie Rodgers a 17 year old A-level student from Llanishen in Cardiff, studying art, textiles and maths. I am inspired by vibrant colours, unusual textures and enjoy transforming old things into new.  My art work is often elaborate and involves collections of small items brought together to create one big piece.

This collection of dresses focuses on recycling and global sustainability as I am very interested in creating fashion pieces using non conventional materials. The idea behind these designs is finding new ways to re-use unwanted items in a positive way without having to actually go through the recycling process.
